Derby, England -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/19/2017 -- Saffron was once produced on a large scare in England however over many years the exotic spice became rarer and rarer until it eventually disappeared. However 500 years on a Cheshire business is now trying to bring saffron back to the British menu, growing it hydroponically and succeeding immensely.
In Delamere Forest the Cheshire Saffron Company are now preparing to harvest their next batch of English saffron. Since 2004 they have been working toward this, taking part in a multitude of research to get where they are today. The company use hydroponics systems which enable them to grow saffron which they would otherwise not be able to grow due to poor conditions.
Saffron farming requires a lot of attention and effort – 2 flowers for example only create 1 gram of saffron. Because of this the company are only currently selling their saffron to fine dining restaurants in the North West however this is set to be expanded.
A spokesperson from one of the UK leading hydroponics providers was incredibly keen to comment saying "Here at Tropicanna Horticulture we are constantly urging all to grow hydroponically as it allows for people to grow produce in which would otherwise be impossible to grow. We would love to hear from anyone who has tried to grow saffron in their hydroponic grow tents, and also always like to hear about all other hydroponic journeys and stories."
